Mine's a tale that can't be told...

Cornbread

In the 10 years since I last slipped one past the goalie, I’ve consumed copious quantities of beer. I’ve spent untold hours on the couch, my lap supporting a computer that gets so hot Apple actually had to issue a warning that it is not, in fact, a laptop, but rather a “portable computer.” I’ve taken extraordinarily hot baths when naked and worn briefs when dressed.

But let there be no mistake: MY boys still swim. And Dawn’s oven still cooks.

So, with great pride, I’d like to announce Cornbread Byars, coming to a kitchen near you early 2009. (Unless it’s a girl, of course, in which case we’ll call her Muffin.)

Amazingly, my brother Andrew is also having his second kid, after a 14 year hiatus. Based on off-the-cuff calculations, these unborn cousins were conceived a day apart, May 3rd and May 4th. I found that incredibly ironic (and a bit creepy) until I remembered that May 2nd is Andrew’s birthday. Andrew never had much game; I figure he just got lucky for his special day.

I find it amusing to think of this turn of events from mom and dad’s perspective. Their two sons produced their first two grandchildren at what I like to consider very precocious ages. But after a decade of waiting, you have to figure they gave up on Andrew and me as providing further contributions to the gene pool. Then, during the same week, they discover Cornbread and Lucky are a’coming. I imagine deciding which newborn to visit first is going to be a difficult decision for them to make when both babies pop out at the same time, and I certainly don’t want to influence their decision in any way.

After all, LA is just like Marshall, if you don’t mind traveling another couple thousand miles to sit in a traffic jam.
